The last decade, gender imbalances have been noted to persist in the global research output, along with significant inequities in authorship of publications across different disciplines. Invited speakers and organization panels in conferences and meetings seem biased towards male scientists. A number of websites focused on gender representation in conference panels and invited speakers has been created in order to provide data and spread light on this inequality.
BiasWatchEvol is a project inspired by the BiasWatchNeuro project (biaswatchneuro.com) and funded by the Equals Opportunities Initiative Fund of the European Society of Evolutionary Biology, in order to raise awareness for gender imbalances in the field of Evolutionary Biology. This effort is also supported by Imperial College London.
"The chief distinction in the intellectual powers of the two sexes is shewn by man’s attaining to a higher eminence, in whatever he takes up, than can woman—whether requiring deep thought, reason, or imagination, or merely the use of the senses and hands. " - Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man
The main goal of this project is to provide data about gender inequalities in Evolutionary Biology, in order to raise awareness and facilitate the effort of overcoming the existing (sometimes unconscious) gender bias in science. The first aspect of our work is to analyse the genders representation in the authorship of journals of evolutionary biology and its effect on the impact of each paper. Furthermore, we wish that this website will keep evolving and form a common ground for more scientists in our field to work towards gender equality.
